Описание

Global Affairs Club (GAC) – previously known as Skoltech Discussion Club (SDC) – was established in November 2015 by six graduate students from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, commonly known as Skoltech. Objectives The objectives of the Club are: To get acquainted with economic, political, social, technological, environmental and legal issues and events happening worldwide; and To share perspectives on various issues through both verbal and written discussions. Motivation To help the Club members correctly identify problems in the society and find ways to address them There are numerous, seemingly unrelated, events happening worldwide. By sharing perspectives and assimilating information of various events, we want to be able to connect the dots and see the bigger picture. The Club intends to help its members and the Club’s online audience correctly identify problems in the society and find ways to address them with innovative ideas. What we do There are mainly two things we do: 1) regular discussion meetings and 2) online publication of opinion articles. Regular discussion meetings The GAC meetings usually take place at the Skoltech building once or twice a month for 90 minutes. We usually have speaker(s) having a panel discussion or giving a talk for 40-60 minutes for the first half of the meeting. Then, we open the floor to discuss questions asked by the attendees. Online publication of opinion articles GAC members have an option to publish their opinion articles based on the discussion topics or other topics of their interests. These articles will be published online on our website and by the Skoltech paper journal . What we have done Since November 2015, GAC meetings covered the following topics: Human Migration: from Refugee Crisis to Brain Drain Neo-Colonialism and Hegemony Journey of the Self-Proclaimed Caliphate: Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Understanding Russia through its Holidays and beyond Dissecting the Rise of Contemporary China Two Koreas and their Ambiguous Path to Reunification Global Threats of Infectious Diseases Demystifying the Middle East: from the teachings of the Holy Qur’an to growing presence of made-in-China products in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets Exploring the Land of the Pure: Pakistan and its Troubled Relationship with India The Danger of a Single Story: Exploring Africa through Stories Please check our website for opinion articles written by GAC members.
